Fondation Arte Musica: "Triptych" by Luna Pearl Woolf

05.12.16 |7:30pm

Salle Bourgie, Montreal, Quebec CA

As part of the Consonance and Dissonance series of the Musée des Beaux Arts de Montreal, this evening features works by composer Luna Pearl Woolf. On the programme are three works that explore the dynamics of the number three by revelling in romantic tensions, dramatic twists and legendary battles. Mélange à trois is a wordless opera for violin, cello and percussion that tells the story of a love lost and found. In the String Trio (Pueraria lobata), three protagonists interact, mingling and overlapping like the kudzu vine that gives the piece its name. Finally, in her newest work, Woolf lends a voice to the three raw, battered wooden Venuses that make up Jim Dine’s sculpture. Woolf’s music, for three female voices, three cellos and three double basses, investigates what these colossal women convey about the gifts of power, wisdom and seduction that inhabit us all. Featuring sopranos Ellen Wieser and Jana Miller and mezzo-soprano Kristin Hoff.

To underscore that tragic moment in the history of Armenia, the renowned composer Krzysztof Penderecki will be conducting a work written especially for the occasion. For this concert, rising as it does from the depths of darkness in the soundscape of Veljo Tormis to scores by Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Bernstein, the music turns towards the light, bearing with
it hope and peace.
